Environmental protection and competitive growth are two causes the European Union (EU) is particularly committed to. By the year 2013, around 200 million euros will be made available for projects concerning green technologies, management methods, services and products. All small and medium-sized European enterprises that contribute sustainable environmental protection ideas and eco-innovations as well as eco-technologies can profit from this funding. With the current EU call for proposals titled "Eco-Innovation. Where Business Meets the Environment", projects are being funded that have an innovative character and show clear benefits in support of Europe's environmental policy objectives. Projects supported up to now come from the fields of materials recycling, the building and construction industry, the food and drink sector, and the area of greening business and 'smart' purchasing.
Within the framework of the "initiative environment business" ("initiative umwelt unternehmen"), the Bremen Investment Agency, Bremer Investitions-Gesellschaft mbH (BIG), the central service-providing body for business and economic development in Bremen, offers assistance and advice to interested enterprises and institutions from Bremen and Bremerhaven about the subjects involved and helps in finding partners.
